Sulaymaniyah, 3 December 2008. Marking International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and 16 days of Activism against Gender Based violence, Asuda continues the activities and awareness campaign marking the event in Sulaymaniyah Governorate.
The activities supported by PRT include publication and dissemination of banners , leaflets and other communication materials as well as radio programmes about 25 November and the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence. In the course of the activities, Asuda visits and conducts seminars in several secondary and intermediate schools in towns and villages around Sulaymaniyah governorate. These activities will continue until 10 December. Women's activists around the world mark 25 November every year as a day against violence since 1981. On 17 December 1999, the UN General Assembly designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (Resolution 54/134). The UN invited governments, international organizations and NGOs to organize activities designated to raise public awareness of the problem on this day as an international observance. Women around the world are subject to rape, domestic violence and other forms of violence, and the scale and true nature of the issue is often hidden. This date came from the brutal assassination in 1960, of the three Mirabal sisters, political activists in the Dominican Republic, on orders of Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo (1930-1961). |
