Sulaymaniyah, 17 June 2009: Banaz Mahmoud Mahmoud was killed by her father in the UK in Mid 2006 under pretexts of honour. Banaz, then aged 20, was forced to marry by her father which subsequently ended in divorce. After her divorce, Banaz was involved in a relationship with another person, an act which was not accepted by her family and let to the killing of Banaz by her father and uncle. |

Sulaymaniyah, 16 May 2009: A delegation representing the Danish Refugee Council visited Asuda and met Ms. Khanum Raheem Lateef, Asuda's Programme Manager. The delegation comprsied Dr. Elie Abouaoun, Manager for Portection and Capacity Building, Ms. Suher Sindi, KRG Office Coordinator, Mr. Fouad Ali Jaff, Public Relations Officer, Kurdistabn Region and Mr. Dana from Sulaymaniyah Govenor's Office.
Ms. Raheem discussed with visiting delegation the overall situtaion of women's rights in Kurdistan as well as Asuda's programmes and activities. both sides also discussed other issues of common interest. |

Sulaymaniyah, 12 May 2009: Last year on this day, 11 May 2008 at 2300 HRS, Asuda’s shelter building in Sulaymaniyah came under gunfire attack by unidentified gunmen. As a result of the attack, a woman held at the shelter was seriously wounded by three direct bullets. The gunmen apparently opened fire on the shelter from a house [reportedly unoccupied] next to the shelter and shot at the shelter premises. The relevant security and police authorities were immediately notified about the incident and security authorities started investigation into the incident to identify the motives and perpetrators of the attack. |

Erbil, 5 May 2009: Under the auspices of the KRG Prime Minister Mr. Nechirvan Barzani and in the presence of several KRG Ministers and Mr. Samir Zubaidi, the Iraqi Minister for Civil Society Affairs as well as a number of MPs and representatives of NGOs, Asuda received the Civil Society Award.
The award was given to 10 NGOs and Civil Society organziations selected by a special committee. |

Sulaymaniyah 25 April 2009: Asuda completes a series of seminars on women's political participation and elections awareness within the framework of a porject funded by Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) provided information and guidance for women on poiticial rights, voting and nomination for elections in the context of Iraqi constitution and the international conventions and agreements on women's political rights. |
