Asuda demands KRG immediate ban of FGM

 In a letter by Ms. Khanim Raheem Latif, Asuda Director addressed to the Kurdistan Regional Government [KRG] Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Barham Ahmed Salih on 15 July 2010, Ms. Lateef calls upon the KRG to and the Kurdistan Parliament Chair as well as MPs and all relevant parties to intensify efforts being made to approve the draft resolution on domestic violence at the Kurdistan Parliament.

The letter underlines the importance of passing the draft law on domestic violence part of which calls for the prohibition of FGM and regard it as an illegal practice in Kurdistan.

 
Asuda continues UUSC supported rights awareness project

Asuda starts the first stage of awareness sessions for women on women's rights and access to legal mechanisms. The first round of sessiona targeted women in IDPs communities in Bakrajo suburb, Arbat and Said Sadiq subdistricts in Sulaymaniyah.

 The dissemination of Human Rights Watch report on 16 June 2010 on FGM and the reactions by activists and NGOs to the report initiated a controversy about the issue. Also, in the last couple of days and on 6 July 2010, the Association of Islamic Clerics in Kurdistan issued a “Fatwa” on FGM in which parents [or guardians] of girls were given the choice of conducting FGM to their girls.

 
Asuda Staff Receive Training on Social Media Techniques

Sulaymaniyah, Asuda staff received training on the use of social media and web techniques in a training course in Asuda's Office in Sulaymaniyah from 30 June to 2 July 2010. The training was conducted in the framework of the partnership between Asuda and Bridging the Divide as well as exchange of experience amongst the BTD partners.

 
Swedish Social Democratic Party Delegation Visits Asuda

On 31 May 2010, a delegation from the Swedish Social Democratic Party headed by Ms. Mona Sahlin , Party Chair accompanied by Mr. Urban Ahlin, Deputy Chair of Committee on Foreign Affairs, Ms. Ann Linde, International Secretary, Mr. Oscar Stenstrom, Foreign Policy Adviser and Mr. Claes Nordmark, Communications Officer and Mr. Shorish Qadir visited Asuda Office in Sulaymaniyah.
